Understanding Your Thoughts: 80% Negative, 90% Repetitive

Dear Thinker,

Welcome to the first newsletter in our "Mastering Your Mindset" series. Today, we're diving into a fascinating aspect of human psychology that shapes our daily lives in profound ways: the nature of our thoughts.

Did you know that on average, 80% of our thoughts are negative, and 90% are repetitive from day to day? This startling statistic reveals why so many of us struggle with self-doubt, anxiety, and feelings of being stuck. But here's the good news: once you understand this pattern, you can begin to change it.

The Science Behind Our Thoughts

Our brains are incredible organs, constantly processing information and creating neural pathways. These pathways become stronger the more we use them, which is why habitual thoughts can be so hard to break. It's like a well-worn path in a forest – the more it's traveled, the easier it is to follow.

Why So Negative???

From an evolutionary perspective, our brains are wired for negativity. Our ancestors needed to be alert to threats for survival, so our minds naturally gravitate towards potential problems or dangers. While this was once crucial for survival, in our modern world, it often leads to unnecessary stress and anxiety.

The Impact of Repetitive Thoughts

An estimated 90% of our behavior is driven by these ingrained patterns and scripts that run constantly in the background of our minds. Out of the 70,000 thoughts we have each day, a staggering 95% originate from the subconscious – and tragically, over 80% of those thoughts are negative.

The fact that 90% of our thoughts are repetitive explains why it can be so challenging to change our mindset. We're essentially running the same mental programs day after day, reinforcing our existing beliefs and perspectives.

Recognizing Your Thought Patterns

The first step to change is awareness. Try this exercise: For one day, keep a thought journal. Jot down the recurring thoughts you notice, especially the negative ones. You might be surprised by what you discover.

The Power of Awareness

Simply becoming aware of your thought patterns is a powerful step. It's like turning on a light in a dark room – suddenly, you can see what you're dealing with. This awareness allows you to start making conscious choices about your thoughts.

Strategies for Change

  1. Thought Stopping: When you notice a negative thought, imagine a big red STOP sign. This interrupts the pattern.

  2. Cognitive Restructuring: Challenge negative thoughts. Ask yourself, "Is this really true? What evidence do I have?"

  3. Mindfulness: Practice observing your thoughts without judgment. This creates space between you and your thoughts.

  4. Mental Diet: Take on a 3-day challenge to completely eliminate any external and internal thoughts, ideas, information influx that has any negative aspects (media, TV, toxic friends, etc.) Ask me for more information!

The Benefits of Positive Thinking

Research has shown that positive thinking can lead to lower rates of depression, better cardiovascular health, and even increased lifespan. It's not about ignoring life's challenges, but rather approaching them with a constructive mindset.

Daily Practices

  1. Gratitude Journaling: Each day, write down three things you're grateful for.

  2. Positive Affirmations: Create and repeat affirmations that counteract your common negative thoughts.

  3. Visualization: Spend a few minutes each day visualizing your ideal self and life.

  4. Helping others: Volunteer to help someone in need.

Remember, changing your thought patterns is a journey, not a destination. Be patient with yourself and celebrate small victories along the way.

In our next newsletter, we'll explore how to identify and challenge the limiting beliefs that often fuel our negative thoughts. Until then, I encourage you to start observing your thoughts. You have the power to reshape your mental landscape!

Wishing you mindful moments,

Natasha Bussey
